Note

Hey folks.. hopefully you are working on your final project (creative project or research paper) and still have the exhibition review on your radar (the review is due 2nd to last week of the semester, so Dec. 9).

We'll have a guest speaker Tuesday Thursday (Curt) so hopefully everyone can make it.

Hey folks.. I'm having fun in class so far, hope you are too... I have a quick, anonymous survey if you have a minute, on how we could make the class better! (Impossible, I know!!)

Thanks

Hi folks..

Since October is almost here, I'm going to post info about our presentations in two weeks.

It'll be 6-10 minutes... teach us something new!

Here is the explanation.

Edit... late, but... as far as essay question, I would just be familiar with the comparison of the daguerreotype, calotype, wet plate and have some ideas about the impact of each. What to expect on test......

• I'll try to take questions mostly from things we've talked about, but I might also ask about some of the more important people and events in the book that we might not have talked about much or at all.
• True false, multiple choice, matching, some short answer. There might be a short essay question. If there is I will give you a few options.
• For identifying photos, I'll probably ask for two out of three for photographer name, title, or date. (You can guess all three and if you have two right I'll give you credit)

I'll update this if there is more I think of.

The camera obscura was fun. Thanks for participating... maybe we can try again on a nice snowy day.. I'll try to find a nice optical lens before then.

Reminder for discussion for Thursday: bring a news item having to do with photography. Culturally, legally, technologically, artistically........ what's going on with Photography right now?

Hey folks,

I posted a link on the side giving a description of the exhibition review assignment. It's due before the last week of class.. if you get it done before then you can hand it in anytime!

To their honor be it said, they have never lowered the dignity of their Art or

their profession by reducing their prices, but their fixed aim and

undeviating rule has been to produce the finest specimens, of which

they were capable,--the finest in every respect, artistic, mechanical,

and chemical; graceful, pleasing in posture and arrangement, and exact

in portraiture.

1855 Review of Southworth and Hawes

In class, Bri asked about France's Daguerreotype patent expiring... this site says 1853. This says the patent in Britain expired August 14, 1853. (needs better citation but I am inclined to believe they are right)

Our first (real) lecture slides found here.
Good second class. Thanks for bringing the books. Hopefully you'll have time to peruse them on your own. We might have an extra credit assignment later that involves reading something similar.

I wanted to clear up a couple terms because I think I flubbed/jumbled them slightly or didn't make it clear enough......

Camera = "room"
Camera obscura = "dark room"
Camera lucida = "light room"

Good first class! I added a link to our Facebook page on the right side.

For Tuesday: Start in on Chapter 1 and bring your photo book from the library to class to share. Try to find something that strikes you as interesting.

For Thursday.. more Chapter 1 and remember to bring your finished worksheet to turn in.
